The Benefits of Domain Name Registrars and ICANN

The internet is an important part of nearly every person’s life. It allows us to interact with others, find businesses and services, and find the information we need on a daily basis. So, how does the internet allow us to do all of this, from a single computer? The answer lies in domain name registrars, and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

How It Works
question markWhen you use the internet to reach others, or find a business, you have to use a web address, or a number. All of these numbers and addresses are unique, and allow for the interaction found on the internet. If these addresses are not created properly, the user is not able to find the correct person or business, which would make the internet nearly unusable for most people. ICANN helps develop protocols that allow domain name registrars to work together to create an internet system that allows the unique web addresses or identifiers to work together to create a worldwide internet that can be used by nearly anyone.

While most internet users use web addresses to locate the person or business they are looking for, it is actually the DNS number that is the most important information about a website.

Computers use the DNS number of a website to find it, rather than simply the web address. The DNS numbers are much like a street address for a website. The DNS number provides the computer with the exact location of the website, which is known as the IP address. When the website address is entered into the computer, a quick cross referencing search is completed that locates the DNS number associated with the address that you entered. While this may seem like an added step that could be avoided by simply using the IP address when trying to locate a person or business, it is much easier to remember web addresses than it is a long series of numbers.

What is a Domain Name?
Domain names are used to tell the computer what address it is looking for. Domain names are essentially a series of descriptors that provide the information needed to find a business or person. Domain names generally start with www, which designates the machine name. This is followed by the mid level domain name, and ends with the .com, .org, or other identifier that represents the top level of the domain where the address is located. Domain names must be unique, otherwise it will be impossible for people to find your organization. In order to ensure that these processes work properly, domain name registrars are used in conjunction with ICANN to ensure that all applicable rules and regulations are followed for proper internet protocol.

Domain Name Registrars
Domain name registrars are services that allow you to create your own unique domain website for you or your organization. A domain name registrar allows you to register your unique web address, which ensures that no other person or business can use the same web address as you. This allows users to find your exact website simply by entering the correct address, instead of having to remember a series of numbers (the IP address).
Domain name registrars often require a fee for registering your unique address, but this ensures that your web address is unique to you or your business, and makes sure that your customers can find your actual site rather than someone else’s.

There are currently many different domain name registrars available to choose from, but legitimate registrars are those that hold an accreditation from ICANN.

This accreditation is usually given to registrars who are allowed to provide the following domain name suffixes:

.aero – aviation related websites
.biz – business websites
.com – the most common suffix
.coop – used only by cooperatives
.gov – reserved for government use only
.info – sites that provide information
.museum – museum and museum related people
.name – used for individual people only
.net – generally used for Microsoft framework
.org – used only by non-profit organizations
.pro – only available for professionals who are licensed

Domain name registrars allow you to register your domain name using these suffixes, providing that no other person or business currently owns that domain name. If the name you wish to use is already taken, you will need to come up with your own unique name in order to register it so that no one else can choose it in the future.

What is ICANN?
icann logoICANN, or the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is a non-profit organization that is the authority over domain names. This organization determines and enforces the policies, rules, and regulations that are required by domain name registration to ensure that the internet remains usable for all who use it. ICANN oversees the creation of domain name rules to ensure that policies and procedures are followed properly, which maintains the usability of the internet.

ICANN uses regulation to ensure that the structure of the internet remains such that it continues to run as smoothly as possible. This includes overseeing the domain name registrars to ensure that they are using the correct domain names, and following the required regulations to keep the internet usable. These responsibilities also include regulating the use of the top level domain hierarchies such as the .net, .com, and .org suffixes.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers works with the IANA, or Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, which is responsible for providing and maintaining the numbering systems used for developing IP addresses and other internet protocols. Whereas ICANN regulates the use and creation of domain name systems, IANA assists by providing the numbering systems needed for developing domain name locations.

The regulation and use of domain names allows internet users to locate the exact people or businesses they are looking for. Without the assistance of ICANN and IANA, domain name registrars would be essentially useless, as it would be impossible to locate the correct addresses.

DONA.com Offers UDRP Insurance With Domain Registration

Now you can get free UDRP insurance when you register a domain through the newly launched DONA.com. UDRP stands for Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy.

Francois Carrillo is the promoter of this new domain registrar. His previous history in the domain industry includes Domaining.com.

Carrillo says that if you get hit with a UDRP complaint, then the insurance you get will help free legal help for an initial estimation of your chances of winning the domain name dispute.

The insurance includes special rebates for hiring attorneys from a list. Your legal expenses will be reimbursed if you win the UDRP. The cost of a UDRP legal defense is heavy. There are no insurance premiums to be paid, so it seems to be a value added offer for domain buyers.

An ordinary investor registers a domain under the assumption that it has no issues and you own it fair and square. It should not cost you anything more in legal fees to make sure you continue to own it.

A couple of points merit further discussion. DONA.com will be donating 30 percent of all its profits to the Internet Commerce Association. The ICA lobbies for the domain name industry in Washington and defends its interests with ICAAN.

The second point worth noting is that DONA.com’s domain registration rates are not rock-bottom rates for domain investors. DONA.com is a reseller for Enom.com. The rate for a .com, .net or .org domain registration or transfer is $11.15. There is the novelty and value of the UDRP insurance and the donation to the ICA. All said and done, it is still a fair deal.

US Claims Right to Shutdown Any .Com Domain

What seemed like a routine cat and mouse game between federal United States agencies and illegal online websites has blown up into a huge controversy over how much control the US maintains over the internet.

The whole controversy began with the U.S. pursuit of Bodog.com, which is run by Canadians and registered in Canada.

It’s an online betting site, which is illegal in the US, meaning that they cannot take bets from or make pay-offs to US citizens.

But they were indicted for doing just this, and the US initiated proceedings to shut them down. One would assume that the US would go to the Canucks to ask them to get the Canadian registrar to shut down the site.

But the US took a shortcut and went straight to Verisign, which has the contract from ICANN to manage the .com and other generic top-level domains (gTLD). Verisign complied with the US “request” and changed the Name Server records for Bodog.com so that the site now redirects to a takedown page, instead of the server hosting the pages put up by the owners.

Wired.com looked into this subject in a little more detail to see if this was standard operating procedure in such cases, and it turns out that the official position – as stated to Wired.com by a US customs enforcement spokeswoman, is that the US reserves the right to seize or shit down any .com, .net and .org domain name if it is in violation of US law, regardless of the law in the country where the site is registered.

Way it works when they want to shut down a site is that the US usually serves court orders to Verisign, which manages .com, .net, .cc, .tv and .name, and to the Public Interest Registry, which manages .org domains. Both are based on US soil in Virginia, and so is ICANN, which is based in Marina del Rey, California.

In case you have a site at risk and want to back up your large files, there’s a service called YouSendIt.com to store and share large files. I just used this YouSendIt.com Promo Code to get a free trial.

Let the social web find the best registrars

To be happen to mention that the best place to find deals on hosting or domain registrars is typically by asking others. In other words this is perfect for the social web 2.0 community, allowing others to communicate the best deals. For instance we found this GoDaddy promo code that allows you to obtain a discount. Click the link and you’ll be taken to one of what we believe to be the best coupon sites available. Because it is not a coupon site at all.

Is actually, more than anything, a forum. So individuals can find the best deals and post about the best deals you can find what is going to allow you to obtain the best price. Not only can someone post the best deal but chances are they’ve taken advantage of it themselves and the deal is in fact good. Also others can comment on the deals let you know if they are still available worth maybe there is even a better deal.

There’ve been cases I have seen were people have found multiple online discounts or coupons, better known as promo codes, and gotten incredible deals by stacking the codes. In some cases I actually saw free computers. That was right before Christmas. But you never know what available in the best place to find it is not by looking at a company that has a staff but instead looking at a company that uses the thousands of people online.

.uk register passes the 7 million mark

According to Nominet, .uk now has over 7 million registered.

What is a .tk domain?

There are many domain extensions out there, a .tk domain can be free or additional services carry a cost.

Essentially the .tk owners decided to focus their service on the pitch that you can

transform any long url into a short .tk domain

Essentially they just make it easy, you put your long URL in and they provide you with a shorter .tk URL. You can then send anyone to your new .tk URL and they will be forwarded to the longer URL you put in. This can also be accomplished by purchasing any domain and forwarding to the longer URL. However .tk makes it free, or you can purchase additional services for a fee. Eventually if there is not enough traffic you will lose the free .tk domain unless you upgrade to a paying account.

See the .tk site here.
