Top 10 Most Valuable gTLDs, as per Sedo

The buzz around the new generic top level domains announced by ICANN on June 13 continues unabated. Sedo.com has published a study that analyzes the potential value of each new gTLD.

The top 10 of almost 2,000 domains applied for are as below.

1. Shop
2. Web
3. Site
4. Music
5. Hotel
6. One
7. Blog
8. Eco
9. Sport
10. Love

The analysis was done by Sedo product manager for domain pricing strategies Thies Lindenthal. His track record includes the creation of domain price index IDNX.

Lindenthal says that a new gTLD may not be so new in terms of pricing strategies. They should be considered as traditional domain names on steroids. Their pros and cons need to be evaluated just like any other domain.

Lindenthal explains that he used five criteria that tend to affect a domain’s value.

- Number of applicants trying to get hold of the gTLD.
- Google query search volume within the gTLD.
- Ad cost-per-click with the gTLD as a keyword.
- Number of .com domains which include the gTLD at the end of the URL. An example would be domains such as Myshop.com for My.Shop.
- Number of preregistrations as per UnitedDomains.com.

A look at the number of applications is instructive. But it can be misleading too. A total of 13 companies paid $185,000 for the chance to bid for the .APP domain. But only two companies filed applications for .DOCS. The two companies were Google and Microsoft.

This indicates it is also important to look at who is applying. Other applicants may have been scared off because they realized the two deep-pocketed search giants would be applying.
