(The domain is plus.google.com) it was even beaten by the newcomer Pinterest which was only launched a few months ago. Google is not giving up the social media by relaunching Google Plus with a new look and what is more interesting is that its new interface uses lots of Whitespace – lots and lots of Whitespace.

So what does the whitespace means for the new design of google + and will it be an integral part of its remodeling? The whitespace is actually a feature of the new google + and it is called Responsive Web Design. The whitespace makes the design adoptive to the browser and automatically adjusts its spacing to fit in the browser and unlike Facebook where it has fixed width and spacing and does not depends on the browser’s layout. Basically, the new Google design changes its layout and re-sizes itself when you maximize or adjusts your browser while Facebook just looks the same.

The question is: What will Google + do with the vast whitespaces? Time will tell. Maybe Google will be adding features time to time to fill up the gaps but according to Google the Whitespace they basically just wanted the social networking site to be responsive to the browser.

Although a lot are skeptic with the Whitespace and doubtful whether it would help google + in the battle of social networking site supremacy I personally think the the responsive browser design is a good idea. I like the fact the Google Plus is more focused on contents rather than advertising like Facebook. I also think that the idea is revolutionary and will also be perfect for websites as well and not just for social media sites which have dynamic contents. It would be a great feature for ecommerce sites and other types of websites to have the interactive navigation and responsive layout like google +. If you have not seen the layout yet then head over to Google plus and maybe it is time to revive your interest to the fledgling social site again.

Network Solutions Promo Code http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2012/04/02/network-solutions-promo-code/ http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2012/04/02/network-solutions-promo-code/#comments Mon, 02 Apr 2012 19:53:55 +0000 Alex http://www.domaintalkblog.com/?p=654 Continue reading →]]> Just wanted to share this with you guys real quick, I found a great Network Solutions Promo Code to get a big discount on domain names from Network Solutions. So if you are in the market to buy domain names (and if you are reading this blog, you probably are) you should check out this deal, it’s only going on for a limited time, but they are offering domains for just $6.99, which is cheaper than any other deals I have seen lately. Are You Part of the IPv6 Global Change? http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2012/02/23/ipv6-global-change/ http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2012/02/23/ipv6-global-change/#comments Thu, 23 Feb 2012 15:20:54 +0000 Emman Alcide http://www.domaintalkblog.com/?p=614 Continue reading →]]> The World IPv6 is already set on June 6, 2012 but as early as last year ICANN and other other agencies concerned with the rapid growth of internet has been conducting IPv6 prelaunch and campaigns and top companies has already switched to IPv6 and dropped the ageing IPv4. The question now is are you aware or your companies IT team on the global IP change that is to happen this coming June?

IPv4 was able to provide IP addresses up to four billion but the current population now is more than 7 billion so surely there will be a shortage of IP addresses. Another thing is that most internet users has more than one device like a laptop, a desktop, smartphone, tablets and even console games which requires separate and different IP addresses. Definitely IPv4 will not be able to handle the rapid growth of internet users and thus IPv6 must be implemented.

Just last month, almost 6,700 IPv6 networks were publicly routed on the Internet and more to come in the coming months and also Internet service providers, web companies and home networking equipment manufacturers around the world are asked to permanently enable IPv6.

The major challenge is getting everyone ready for the big change, IPv4 is running out and it is essential that the internet community must play their part. If you work in an internet service provider company or even work as a web developer, there are steps in which you can help yourself and your company be ready in the coming IPv6.

Here are a few steps that can be helpful:

1. Appoint A Project Manager / IT in-charge – It is essential that the company appoints a team head to oversee the changes from IPV4 to IPv6 and its effects in your services. If you are providing web services and your hardware and network are not in compliance with IPv6 then problems will arise.

2. Talk To Your ISP – Probably as of now your ISP provider has switched to IPv6 but they will not tell you about it yet. It is the best thing to call them and ask them regarding the changes from IPv4 to IPv6.

3. Identify the Hardware and Network Infrastructure To be Upgraded – You can call your manufacturer and inquire for upgrades and the latest IPv6 compatible hardware and network components. Since IPv6 has been the buzz in the internet comunity, your manufacturer has probably upgraded all their products to IPv6.

There are only 4 months left before the big switch to IPv6 and most of us probably have not even heard of IPv6 but it is essential that we are aware of it for a simple glitch in the system can cause a major problem in the industry and the global change from IPv4 to IPv6 is not just a simple glitch of a system.

ICANN Finalizes Draft on New WHOIS Policy http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2012/02/07/icann-finalizes-draft-on-new-whois-policy/ http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2012/02/07/icann-finalizes-draft-on-new-whois-policy/#comments Tue, 07 Feb 2012 20:31:47 +0000 Emman Alcide http://www.domaintalkblog.com/?p=606 Continue reading →]]> ICANN, Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has finalized its draft on the new whois policy that will reduce inaccurate whois registration up to 50% in just 12 months. ICANN is very committed in their responsibilities in making the internet safe and secure by overhauling and reviewing the whois policy which provides information on the owner of a domain name and the registrar it uses.

WHOIS allows us to check the information of the registrant of the website as the name and phone number but most of the time its always inaccurate such as false and fictitious names. Although, in the other hand, not giving your real WHOIS information can protect your privacy and intellectual property rights but at least it provides supervision especially for sites that violates certain rules and policies implemented by ICANN. A registrar such as godaddy will have this information.

As an internet user who also own a handful of websites, WHOIS information is very important and I do use real information since I intend to use the internet in regards with the ICANN rules but it is disappointing when you check the WHOIS of some websites and they uses names like “Lady Gaga” or “Justin Bieber” or even “god”. It’s true, privacy is important but you need to take responsibility of the contents that you spread the internet. it doesn’t mean that you have to make your information available in the internet, there are options in which you can hide your WHOIS but at least even if its hidden or protected by domain registrar it is still real.

The final draft has been published last January 30 and a downloadable pdf is available from the ICANN website. ICANN is also seeking for public comments regarding the new policy until March 18, 2012 and I agree with ICANN, seeking public opinion regarding the WHOIS policy is very important for it encompasses privacy, security and responsibility and also intellectual rights.

The team reviewing the new WHOIS policy includes representatives from across the ICANN constituencies, a law enforcement representative, and two independent experts. Domain registrars such as GoDaddy are also posting links on the new policy. I honestly think that this is a good action from ICANN and it can help safeguard the information and protect intellectual rights in the world wide web. Every registrar has to abide by them, price increases or not. Some offer deals to help consumers with the increase such as godaddy coupons which give a discount for domains and other services.

A German pharmaceutical company doing business as Merck evidently entered into an agreement with Facebook in March of last year to hold rights to the page at www.facebook.com/merck. However, the U.S. company doing business as Merck is now “squatting” on that page, and the German Merck has filed suit in New York to get its Facebook page back.

Interestingly enough, the two companies were separated as part of German reparations after World War I. They are not affiliated with each other and are, in fact, competitors. (Who knew a Facebook war could have its origins in 1918?)

This dispute raises the question as to whether regulatory efforts regarding domain names can be translated to other styles of websites. The German Merck’s lawyers argue that the Facebook page is of great marketing value, and that because Facebook does not differentiate internationally in the same way that .coms don’t, the German Merck’s rights to this property of value have been co-opted.

Merck is not suing the U.S. Merck, however; it is suing Facebook only at this time, because Facebook has refused to hand over documents and information that Merck finds necessary to determine how the U.S. Merck obtained access to the facebook.com/merck page. The suit also claims that Facebook was unresponsive and evasive to the German Merck when the company tried to resolve the matter, and hints at further action if nothing is done to restore the Facebook page to the German company.

The suit was filed on the Monday before Thanksgiving. Time will tell whether the page will be returned to the right Merck.

Should You Worry About UDRP? http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2011/11/14/should-you-worry-about-udrp/ http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2011/11/14/should-you-worry-about-udrp/#comments Mon, 14 Nov 2011 20:59:07 +0000 Domain Man http://www.domaintalkblog.com/?p=559 Continue reading →]]> The Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) is a policy established by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to put some order to disputes between people who have purchased certain domain names and people who want the rights to those domain names without paying exorbitant prices for them. For example, the Trump Organization has recently filed UDRP proceedings so as to try and get the owner of TrumpWine.com and TrumpWines.com to hand over ownership of those domain names to The Donald. (Trump has only recently gotten into the business of wines.)

In order for a UDRP complaint to succeed, the complainant must establish three elements:

  1. The complainant has rights to a trademark or a service mark which is identical, or similar enough to be confused with, the domain name.
  2. The person who owns the domain name does not have any rights or any real interest in it.
  3. The person who owns the domain name is using it in “bad faith”.

“Bad faith” can have a complex set of meanings in legalese, and the panel adjudging the UDRP complaint will use a variety of factors to assess whether the use is in bad faith or not. But since a lot of people buy domain names that they hope to sell back at a profit when those names become useful to others, UDRP can be a real concern for people who traffic in domain names.

Unfortunately, the UDRP is weighted somewhat in favor of the person who owns the trademark, not the person who owns the domain name – basically, Trump is likely to win this round. Further legislation is almost certainly coming in the future, but for right now, you’ll walk a thin line in buying a domain name that’s similar to a well-known trademark or service mark.

Directory Listing for SEO: Good or Bad? http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2011/08/15/directory-listing-for-seo-good-or-bad/ http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2011/08/15/directory-listing-for-seo-good-or-bad/#comments Mon, 15 Aug 2011 14:09:54 +0000 Emman Alcide http://www.domaintalkblog.com/?p=467 Continue reading →]]> Is adding the domain name of your website in directory listing sites a bad practice? Is it a black hat or white hat or something in between? They always say that the proof of the pudding is on the eating and it is applicable in the practice of directory listing for SEO.

Directory listing can be both beneficial when it comes to the relevance of your website but it can also downrank your website when not used properly. So the answer to the question will be Yes, it is good for your website and also Yes, it can be a bad practice. Directory listing has been practiced by SEO specialist and internet marketers to gain exposure and increase the traffic of the website. The domain names are added to directory listing based on their relevancy and categories and will be bookmarked and shows up in the SERPs. Since backlinks are the main bases of Google’s algorithm, directory listing may improve the “trust” rating of your website and may affect the boosting of the website’s page rank.

It is also wise to put in mind that directory listing with lesser page rank or with low “trust” value can pull down your website instead of ranking them in the SERPs or adding points for the improvement of your page rank. This is because your website is being backlinked by a so called “bad neighborhood” website. Some SEO specialists randomly submit their website to different directory listing without even checking the relevancy of the site and the end result is your website being involved in a “bad neighborhood” or sites which purpose is for link farming or black SEO which can affect the health of your website.

Directory listing is an effective method for the visibility of your website. If done properly, it can create a one way backlinks which will improve the health of your website and boost its page rank. Even if it is a “no follow” directory listing, the traffic that it generates is also helpful. Directory listing is not a blackhat nor even a greyhat when done properly such as submitting it based on category and its relevance. If directory listing is done through link farming or for the sole purpose of creating more backlinks then it became a blackhat and can potentially damage your site.

Your website may be visible in the directory listing sites which you submitted but not visible in SERP or Search Engine Result Page due to penalties you got from link spamming.

Tucows Wins on Appeal and Domains Ruled Property http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2011/08/08/tucows-wins-on-appeal/ http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2011/08/08/tucows-wins-on-appeal/#comments Mon, 08 Aug 2011 18:57:08 +0000 Domain Man http://www.domaintalkblog.com/?p=338 Continue reading →]]> Let’s set the stage and here is the background. Always start with the facts. Tucows bought the business Mailbank and in that acquisition they obtained the domain name Renner.com. A company named Lojas Renner S.A. (which is a subsidiary of JC Penny) decided to file a UDRP which is the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy that is administered by ICANN. Tucows did not want to go through the process and filed a lawsuit in Ontario, Canada against the company. The company did not want the case to proceed in court so they attempted to have the case removed by arguing that either the Canadian court did not have jurisdiction or the domain name was not property and therefore Tucows could not own it. The company wanted the issue to proceed under ICANNs UDRP.

Initially the ruling was handed down stating that the court did not have jurisdiction and the name was not personal property. Tucows appealed the ruling and the appeals court ruled just the opposite.

The 3 member Appellate Court cited several points but perhaps the most relevant to domain name owners is the following:

“ …Tucows derives income from being the holder of the rights in the domain name renner.com. It has fourteen clients who subscribe to personal e-mail services using the domain name. If the domain name were to be transferred to Renner, it would undoubtedly assist in unlocking the value of Renner’s business. The registered owner of the domain name has the right to exclusively direct traffic to the domain name’s corresponding website and to exclude anyone else from using the same name. The ability to exclude others from the enjoyment of, interference with or appropriation of a specific legal right was held by Cory J. in Bouckhuyt, as a necessary incident of property.”

It is unlikely this decision will be appealed as the next step in the process would be direct appeal to Canada’s Supreme Court.

GoDaddy Hosting Review

GoDaddy has shared hosting as well as dedicated servers. Most hosts provide those items, however they also have what they deemed their 4GH which is hosting that is scalable and reliable. godaddy hosting reviewNot to mention you can utilize their even more serious and impressive cloud hosting. Now in this godaddy hosting review I want to go over the options and the costs relative to one another. So the most reasonable cost is the shared hosting which means your website is on a server with others. If there is an issue with someone elses server they could affect your site by making it unavailable if the server goes down. Then the next step up is their 4GH which spreads your site over multiple servers assuring it is always available to your visitors. They even spread the traffic across those servers as well in case your site traffic spikes. Next you could try a dedicated server however that is not easy and requires quite a bit of server admin skill. The top of the food chain, in some peoples opinion, is their cloud solution allowing you to add resources at any time. That also takes some know how. But it is worth looking at. I would option for the 4GH if it is your first time setting up a site but do read what they have on their site before you choose a service.

Hopefully you found this godaddy hosting review helpful when making a website choice.

Running Low On Ink http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2011/04/20/running-low-on-ink/ http://www.domaintalkblog.com/2011/04/20/running-low-on-ink/#comments Wed, 20 Apr 2011 19:59:11 +0000 Alex http://www.domaintalkblog.com/?p=184 Continue reading →]]> Maintaining this website requires a lot of printing. Although I try and take care of everything online these days, there are still plenty of things that need to be printed onto paper. Documents that people need to sign, letters that need to be sent, things of that nature. Plus, sometimes I just need to be away from the computer so I’ll print out emails or documents that I need to read and take them out into the yard; I find it’s just a lot easier on the eyes to read print on paper then on a computer monitor.

Now I have a cheap source for recycled paper, but ink cartridges and refills for printers are so expensive. I realized that I needed to get a more affordable ink solution before ink cartridge replacement became a major expense of running this business. That’s why last week I started using this 4inkjets coupon to buy all of my ink replacements.

4inkjets.com is already cheaper than buying ink in the stores, way cheaper. And using that coupon I saved 10% off of their prices, so it was a pretty good deal. I used to pay forty bucks for a black ink cartridge at Best Buy, now I order the same cartridges from 4inkjets and get them delivered to my door for about twenty bucks each, a pretty good deal.

So if you also have a business that requires a lot of printing and expensive ink cartridge refills, I’d recommend checking 4inkjets.com to see if they carry your brand in stock, you could be saving as much as fifty percent off of retail store prices for exactly the same product.
